On of the key features of geography of Washington is the lofty Cascade Range runs north-south in Washington and bisects the state into two almost equal halves. Western Washington which lies in the west of the Cascades, has a mostly marine climate in stark contrast to eastern Washington lying on the eastern side of Cascade mountains which has a relatively dry climate with large areas of semi arid steppe and a few truly arid deserts lying in the rain shadow area of the Cascades mountains.

The geography of Washington also boasts of a great maritime position on the Pacific Ocean. The harbors of Puget Sound gives Washington a leading role in maritime trade with Alaska, Canada, and the Pacific Rim. The key characteristics of geography of Washington is that its contrasting natural vegetation. The lush verdant forests of the Olympic Peninsula are the the only temperate rain forests in the continental United States. But the semi-desert east of the Cascade Range has scarce vegetation.
