History of Washington

The history of Washington enables us to get a true insight into the past of this key state of USA. Before to the arrival European settlers this region of the Pacific Coast was inhabited by an array of tribes of Native Americans, each with its own unique culture. On of the key features of History of Washington was the landing of the Europeans in the pacific coast of Washington .The first European to land on the Pacific coast of Washington coast was Spanish Captain Don Bruno de Heceta in who landed in the year 1775.


According to the chronicles of Washington History this area was first explored by the British in the year 1792 when then by British Captain George Vancouver came in this region. The Spanish Nootka Convention of 1790 enable explorers and trappers from other nation especially Britain to explore the area.



The most mention worthy explorer in the history of Washington among all these explorers was Captain Robert Gray who discovered the mouth of the Columbia River. A discourse on history of Washington would surely include the history of political hegemony of Washington. In the year 1819 Spain ceded their original claims to this territory to the United States. This started a period of disputed joint-occupancy by Britain and the U.S. that lasted until June 15, 1846, when Britain ceded their claims to this land with the Treaty of Oregon to the United States of America.

But the true founder of the state of who deserves a special mention in the chapters of history of Washington is the black pioneer George Washington Bush and his Caucasian wife who led four white families into the territory and settled what is now Tumwater in Washington. They took refuge in Washington to avoid Oregon's racist settlement laws. The pioneers wandered into Washington and mainly settled the Puget Sound area. The year 1853 is one of the key years of history of Washington for in that year Washington Territory was formed from part of Oregon Territory. Washington became the 42nd state in the United States in the year 1889.
