Law and Government in Washington

The law and government of Washington can be divided into there main branches, the executive branch, the legislative branch and the judicial branch. Any detailed information about Washington remains incomplete without a discourse on law and government in Washington.

The executive branch of law and government in Washington includes the highest elected officials of the state. During the elections the general populace of Washington not only elect the state Governor and Lieutenant Governor but they also elect two other executive branch officials statewide--the Secretary of State and the Attorney General.



However there is a slight difference in the election procedure of the above mentioned office holders for while candidates for the governor's office are chosen in the August primary election, candidates for the others are nominated at the regular year between presidential elections.



The judicial branch of law and government in Washington is headed by the Supreme court of Washington. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the state which not only hears cases appealed to it from the Court of Appeals but in addition to its judicial duties, the Supreme Court is responsible for the general administrative supervision of all courts in the state. The legislative branch of government of Washington of the bicameral Washington legislature which is composed of a lower House of Representatives and an upper State Senate, with 49 legislative districts apiece.

The local government of Washington is composed of counties, townships, cities, villages and special districts. However a comprehensive review made by the Washington Governor who is the highest elected official of the state revealed that the local government structure of Washington needed to be re organized to redefine the power and authority relationship between counties and municipalities on the fields of service delivery as well as regulatory function.
