While western Washington has always been predominantly liberal with affiliation towards the Democratic Party, easter Washington which is more conservative have always been a Republican stronghold.
However, there have changes in the recent trends in politics in Washington. One of the finest examples of these changes is the fact that Maria Cantwell from Eastern Washington who was a democratic candidate won by a wide margin in 2006 senate race against Republican Mike McGavick. Since population density in western Washington is more that is why the democrats always fare well than the Republican in state elections in Washington.
Washington has always pitted it support for the Democratic candidate in presidential elections in the years 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. So politics in Washington has always shown a democratic bias. Washington was considered a key state in the presidential elections 1968. In that year Washington was the only Western state to give its electoral votes to Hubert Humphrey. However the trends changed diametrically in the 1994 Republican Revolution in which and Washington had the biggest pickup in the house for Republican. In that year seven of the nine house members were Republicans for the state of Washington.
