Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area

The Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area was named after the President Franklin D Roosevelt as can be understood from its name, was made in 1941. The upper Columbia river is rich in cultural and natural significance. The river has provided ample opportunities to the people to trade with each other. Missionaries and explorers for the Hudson Bay Company and the Northwest Trading Company mapped the area and developed relationships with the tribes living there. The unique feature of Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area is that it is the largest recreation feature.

The highlights of visiting Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area are opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, camping, canoeing and visiting historic Fort Spokane and St. Paul’s Mission. Most of the facilities at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area are open year-round. The recreation season at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area is May through October. The visitor Center and Museum at Fort Spokane are open Memorial Day through the middle of October. The weather conditions at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area vary from the northern most part of the park to the southern part. The developed campgrounds and picnic areas at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area are fully accessible. All camping sites are paved.
