Ross Lake National Recreation Area

The most accessible part of the North Cascades National Park Service Complex is the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. Being the corridor for scenic Washington State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway, the Ross Lake National Recreation Area is a major attraction. There are three reservoirs in Ross Lake National Recreation Area. Ringed by mountains, it offers many outdoor recreation opportunities along the upper reaches of the Skagit River, between the north and south units of North Cascades National Park.

The main season for visiting Ross Lake National Recreation Area is mid May through September when the snow blankets all but the lowest elevations during the remainder of the year. Visitors from across US and Canada are attracted to the lake with attractions in Ross Lake National Recreation Area like fishing, hunting, canoeing, kayaking, climbing and hiking opportunities. Along Ross Lake and Diablo reservoirs boat-in camping is allowed. Access to Ross Lake National Recreation Area is easy for many motorists, backpackers entering the North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Weather in the North Cascades varies greatly depending upon season and location. From autumn to spring a major portion of the park is buried under snow. Mid June to late September is the time that is most convenient for visiting Ross Lake National Recreation Area. The west slopes and high peaks catch the brunt of wet systems blowing in from the Pacific Ocean creating a more lush and temperate evergreen forest, while the shielded lower east slopes tend to be warm and dry throughout the summer.

The trees in Ross Lake National Recreation Area are very large and old due to the abundant rain and mild winters that provide a perfect environment for them. Visit the National parks in Washington to get an overview about Washington.
