Alta Lake State Park

Located in the mountainous northwest interior of the state of Washington, the Alta Lake State Park ranks high among the many state parks of Washington. Covering an area of 181 acres, the Alta Lake State Park is situated in the Okanogan County of Washington, which is also the largest county in the entire state. Adjacent to the Alta Lake, the Alta Lake State Park lies beneath towering stone cliffs formed by glaciation that rise 1000 feet (304 m) above the valley floor and carry on up to the top of Old Goat Mountain which sits 4200 ft (1280 m) above the park. A place of exquisite scenic beauty, the Alta Lake was discovered in 1900 by a miner from Wilbur who named it after his daughter Alta Heinz.

The area adjoining the Alta Lake was originally owned by the city of Pateros, Washington, and was later sold to the Washington State Park System in 1951. Stretching about two miles in length and one and a half miles in width, the Alta Lake State Park is a meeting point of mountainous pine forests and deserts. Open only during the summer months of the year, the Alta Lake State Park offers visitors facilities such as hiking, camping, golfing, sailboarding, picnicking, wildlife viewing etc. Trout fishing is also a popular activity in the Alta Lake State Park. Although small in size, the Alta Lake State Park is very popular with visitors.

Besides a group camp that accommodates a minimum of 20 people and up to 88 people, the Alta Lake State Park has 168 tent spaces, 32 utility spaces, four restrooms (one ADA) and 12 showers.
