Lime Kiln Point State Park

Lime Kiln Point State Park is a day-use park set on the west side of San Juan Island. The park covers an area of 36-acre and is considered one of the best places in the world to view whales from a land-based facility. Minke whales, orcas, porpoises, seals, sea lions and otters cruise the shoreline. The peak whale-watching season is May to September, with June and July being the most likely months to see whales. Orca whales are common in the waters off Lime Kiln. The park features a richly diverse environment. As the name suggests, the park was the site of lime kilns beginning in 1860, and one kiln has been restored for public viewing.

Lime Kiln Point State Park includes the remnants and landscapes of a history filled with change, along the rocky shoreline and through the wooded uplands. The park is surrounded by approximately 200 acres of county land that is open to the public. Whale watching boats and guided kayak trips are available on San Juan Island and operate off of Lime Kiln. San Juan Island is excellent for fishing of bottom fish and salmon, but fishing is difficult from shore due to the presence of kelp beds. Self-guided interpretive trail are available all year round with interpreters available for lighthouse tours, guided walks and marine mammal programs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Other park amenities include ten picnic sites and 11 parking stalls. Lime Kiln Point State Park is located in an area protected by surrounding ocean waters and mountain ranges. Temperatures are consistently moderate, rarely topping 80 degrees in the summer and rarely falling below 30 degrees in the winter
