Transportation in Washington

The Washington State Department of Transportation has been assigned with the job of constructing, maintaining and regulating the Transportation in Washington. The transport infrastructure of Washington includes railways, roadways including inter-sate and intra-state highways, state ferries and state airports. The Washington State Department of Transportation is led by a Secretary and overseen by the Governor of Washington.

Transportation in Washington is very regularized. In Washington every road or state highway is owned and maintained by Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Every such road has a State Route number by the US law.

The Washington ferry routes are also comes under the state highway system. As a result they share a common number except for state route 339 between Vashon heights and Seattle has a ferry service and no actual highway. Washington has four longest floating bridges in the world like the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge, Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge and the Homer M. Hadley Bridge over Lake Washington and the Hood Canal Bridge connecting Olympic Peninsula and Kitsap Peninsula. These bridges are very important routes for Transportation in Washington.

In Washington most of the beaches are drivable within a speed limit of 25 MPH.

There are seven interstate highway routes in Washington like the I-82, I-90, I-182, I205, I-405 and I-705.

In Washington the US routes are also owned by WSDOT. The US Routes are Route 2, Route 12, Route 97, Route 101 and Route 195.



The Cascade Mountains Range poses a great challenge to the transportation in Washington. Washington has 7 major mountain passes and 8 minor passes. During winter lot of protection are taken to keep the passes safe from avalanche. However some of the routes through these passes close during winter due to massive snowfall and avalanche.
